The movement of a stingray has inspired this design. This piece is a kinetic sculpture. It is suspended from the ceiling to hang at about eye level. The tempo of this piece depends on its surroundings as a stingray would; if no one is around the lights stay at a calm tempo matching the movement of the piece but as one moves closer the light will start to blink more rapidly. The movement of the couple hundred pieces of straws is meant to show the beauty and fluidity of the movement a stingray makes. It is fascinating that such a mechanical thing can be so organic and so beautiful.
The stingray part of the sculpture is made of straws. The frame is made for wood. The cam shaft is made from wood and laser cut acrylic, with use of a motor. And the lights are programmed with Arduino.
